Well, you can probably see I have been neglecting this blog a little recently. The main reason is because I had my main computer die on me in the middle of some tight deadlines.

To cut a very long & dull story short my 3 year old (3 years 2 months) G5 Powermac became unstable. Sometimes it ran with only one processor which is not good and other times it would seem OK, but had various crashes while sleeping. Sadly the Applecare extended warranty was 2 months out of date & Apple think that it’s OK for a machine to die completely when that close to the warranty. I think it finally died when it crashed once during sleep, something it had always done which is what make me feel Apple has some responsibility to help fix this.

I tried everything I could to bring it back to life. The local Apple Genius bar want me to pay to have parts switched until they manage to replace the ones that are causing the issue. It could stretch to the cost of a new computer by the time the processors & main logic board are replaced.

Sadly I have had to downgrade and just get on with it. I can’t help loving Apple products, but I can’t ever claim they are reliable, 3 years 2 months isn’t a long time for a catastrophic failure on a ‘Pro level’ system.

After looking on various Mac user forums, it became clear a lot of people were having G5’s die after 3~4years. I did set up a place to log these failing Macs but don’t really know what to do with the data that comes in. That page is closed for submissions.
